Here's to the rule breakers! Sam Hunt hasn't done much of anything by the traditional country music rules and his latest off-the-beaten-path idea is yet another that's paying off. "Body Like a Back Road," a single he released without an album, hit No. 1 on Billboard's Hot Country Songs chart earlier this week.
Historically, country artists might release one single ahead of an album to help build fans' appetite, and then use that appetite to help sell the album. But earlier this year Sam decided to release a series of singles on their own with no immediate plans for an album. "I try to make music that's relevant to my life and relatable to the culture I live in," Hunt told Billboard this month. "Putting out music as it's made, versus holding it until an album's finished, allows me to be more timely and maintain balance."
Manager Brad Belanger offered a little more. "We want to release singles every few months until the album is ready," he told the publication. "There's a good chance we'll have three or four songs out by the time we get the record finished ... This allows us to maintain the momentum and creative pace of Sam's career while alleviating any outside pressure to deliver the album."
Sounds like they've got it figured out! Let's have a re-listen to Sam's new No. 1.
