Lots of folks are buzzing about country music newcomer and “All On Me” singer Devin Dawson.
For the unfamiliar, Devin was a student studying music at Nashville’s Belmont University when in 2014 Taylor Swift came across a video mash-up of two of her songs he’d covered with a friend. “I did this Taylor Swift cover video with my friend Louisa [Wendorff], who I met the first day in my dorm at Belmont University,” he recalled this week in People.
“We did a cover of ‘Blank Space’ and ‘Style.’ My twin brother recorded it and our friend shot a quick video. We just did it to share because we liked it and we thought we had something special. A couple days later, Taylor Swift saw it somehow and Tweeted it, Facebooked it and all this stuff — and it literally was the craziest viral thing I’ve ever seen.”
Devin is still amazed by how fast things moved from there. “It’s unreal to me,” he told People. “She literally said one word. She said ‘Obsessed,’ and then posted the link to the video and it changed my life.”
A record deal followed and Devin’s first album is due out later this year. Its lead single is “All On Me,” which recently broke the Top 50 on the country charts. With perfect timing, he’s released a music video for the song, which was filmed at the long-closed Tennessee State Penitentiary. The result was cool, if not a little eerie. Check it out below.
