Elle is reporting that the lead set designer for the show made the bold choice to go purple, a move he said was not well-received at first.
Many of the other designers and show producers on set thought the color choice was too far out there, but John Shaffner followed through with his decision nonetheless.
In defense of his color choice, Shaffner said he wanted to stand out from other sitcoms, and the purple apartment definitely accomplished that.
The purple theme quickly became part of the show's identity, and people continued to watch the show because it was unique.
