Three years ago today, this sweet little shelter dog became a Bender!
My husband, Chris, and I had been looking for a dog to adopt for awhile, but hadn’t yet found the right fur fit for our family. “Camille” was the very last dog in the very last kennel of the very last shelter that we visited.
The minute that I laid eyes on Camille, I fell in love. She walked over to the kennel door and I said to her, “You’re so perfect! If I was your mommy, I’d call you Mary Poppins because you’re practically perfect in every way!” (I also told Chris that we HAD to get her, because she had red fur and looked like our ginger child!)
After we left the shelter, I couldn’t stop thinking about that sweet little girl. I knew that I couldn’t live without her, so that afternoon, I called the shelter and told them that we wanted her.
The only problem was, it was Saturday and “Camille” hadn’t yet been vetted, and therefore couldn’t be adopted–and the shelter didn’t allow holds on animals.
Camille was scheduled to be spayed that Thursday, so every day that week, I made the 40-minute drive from Grovetown to Augusta Animal Services to see her and basically spend the day with her so that no one else could beat me to her.
Thursday rolled around, and when I arrived at the shelter, Camille was gone; she was still at the vet being spayed. With the shelter’s policy, as soon as Camille arrived back from the vet, she would officially be able to be adopted–but if someone else came in before me, she would go to them.
I was NOT having that, so I waited for Camille to return from the vet, and that afternoon, still wobbly from her anesthesia, Camille became Mary Poppins Bender and came home to her new Mommy & Daddy.
To say that this little girl has brought joy to our lives would be the biggest understatement ever.
There is nothing like the unconditional love that a dog gives you–and I believe that love is compounded when you adopt a pet from a shelter. They just have an air of gratitude to their personality.
Mary Poppins quickly adjusted to her new home, and although she still has that shy personality, she has also developed a sassy streak–it’s her world; we’re just living in it.
She lives up to her name every day–practically perfect in every way–and although we celebrate her EVERY day, today, on her official “gotcha” day, we enjoy looking back over the past three years with our little princess Poppins…
