The American Kennel Club has just released their list of the most popular dog breeds from last year. The list of most popular dog breeds is determined by registration statistics.
Interestingly, studies have shown that the popularity of a breed can vary based on what’s trending in pop culture. So if a popular movie features a certain breed of dog, chances are that breed will increase on the popularity list!
Here are the top 5 most popular dog breeds. See if your pup made the cut!
Number 5: Bulldog
You can’t help but smile when you see a face like this. Plus, it’s the beloved mascot for our Georgia Bulldogs. This breed is loyal and calm, adapting to city or country life well.
Number 4: Golden Retriever
How can you not love these beautiful, fluffy dogs? They always seem so full of energy and love life. Goldens are friendly, devoted and intelligent. They make great service dogs, or family dogs!

Number 3: German Shepherd
These guys are gorgeous, but also great protectors. They are strong, muscular, agile and super smart dogs. German Shepherds are loyal, confident and courageous. They are a true working breed.
Number 2: French Bulldog
How cute are these little ones?! Those ears are irresistible! This breed is small and popular among city-dwellers. They are alert, adaptable and playful.
Number 1: Labrador Retriever
These guys topped the list for the 30th year in a row. There’s no denying that labs make great family dogs. They are full of energy, love to play, protect their homes and give unconditional love! They have such sweet faces, and they’re friendly, outgoing and super affectionate. Great for families looking for medium to large breeds!
