Tee Gentry/Beasley Media GroupDid you know North Augusta was once home to one of the largest hotel resorts in the country? The Hampton Terrace Hotel was planned by James U. Jackson, the founder of North Augusta. It was part of his plan to make North Augusta a resort town.
It opened in 1903 and was destroyed in a fire in 1916.
Hampton Terrace was a 300-room hotel with a 9-hole (later 18) golf course and a 15,000-acre game preserve. It was billed in advertisements as "The Most Magnificent Winter Resort in the World." Not sure if they ran commercials on KICKS 99. :)
The project cost over $500,000 and was reportedly the largest wooden structure in the world.
During the hotel’s short-lived tenure in North Augusta, it attracted powerful Golden Age celebrities. John D. Rockefeller, Andrew Carnegie, and even President Taft.
The hotel was on Carolina Avenue in North Augusta.
