Thomas Rhett Recalls Asking His Wife’s Father For Her Hand

Thomas Rhett and his wife Lauren will celebrate their 10th wedding anniversary on Wednesday, October 12th. In thinking about the big day this week, Thomas reflected on when he asked his now father-in-law for his daughter's hand in marriage.

Thomas recalled, "I did not show up unannounced. I actually called Lauren's dad and said, 'Hey, I'm gonna come over. I would like to ask you a question.' And if you know my wife's dad, he is one of the most amazing but also crazy humans on this planet. And so he goes, 'What are you comin' over here for, to ask me if you wanna marry my daughter? I mean, the answer's yes, but you can come over here if you want to.'"

He continued, "And so I was like, 'Alright, well, on my way.' And I get to the front door, and he's just standing at the front door with a video camera. And he's like, 'Alright, Tom, ask me what you wanna ask me.' And that just completely broke all the ice. He knew it was happening anyway. But I'll just never forget that because it was the most untraditional asking your wife's dad for permission to marry 'em or whatever. But I remember that so vividly, and he still, every year at Christmas, he shows me that video. "

Rhett added that six months before, he confessed his feelings to Lauren, and he confessed to his future father-in-law that he was still in love with his daughter. At that time, Lauren's dad told Thomas he better tell Lauren or else he was gonna say something to her.

The couple met in kindergarten and became friends in sixth grade, and from that point on, Thomas admits he was smitten with Lauren. They briefly dated in 10th grade until Lauren decided they were better off as friends. Afterward, they dated other people, attended separate colleges, and even got into serious relationships with other people. When Thomas reconnected with Lauren in 2011 at a graduation party for her younger sister, he knew he was still in love with her. He ultimately confessed his feelings to her, and six months later, Thomas proposed to Lauren.

Thomas Rhett and his wife Lauren have four daughters who are all under kindergarten age, and according to Thomas, the couple is going to hit "pause" on having more kids for now.

He told CMT recently, “I think Lauren and I were really honest with each other and were like, ’Let’s take a pause for four or five years and kind of get the hang of what this is going to look like.'”

Rhett did say that the couple's oldest daughter Willie Gray, who is six and was adopted, talks about adoption all the time. He offered, “Adoption is 100 percent on our brains in the next four to five years. We would love to do that. It’s been put on our hearts very heavily to do that again; we just don’t know when.”

Thomas also said not too long ago that he wants a big family, but added, “We’ll see what happens.”
