Is Your Lottery Ticket A Winner?

Who else wins on their lottery ticket and you leave it laying around and almost forget to cash it in? I'm guilty. This one has been laying on my desk for over a month and every time I go to North Carolina (where I bought it) I forget to take it with me.

Now, it's only a $30 winning ticket, and I paid $30, so no gain, but I keep forgetting. Which made me wonder... how many people lose big paydays by not turning their tickets in, whether they lose them or forget to check them? You May Be A Lottery Winner!

How Many Jackpots Go Unclaimed?

According to CNBC, more than you think.....many more.

In March of this year in Maryland, no one came forward by the deadline to claim a $10 million prize. $10 million! How does that happen?

What's Wrong With New York?

There have been larger amounts that have gone unclaimed in both Powerball and Mega Millions lotteries.

  • Aug. 1, 2006: A $31 million jackpot went unclaimed in Queens, New York.
  • April 25, 2003: A $46 million jackpot went unclaimed in Brooklyn, New York.
  • Dec. 24, 2002: A $68 million jackpot went unclaimed in New York.

New Yorkers better start paying attention. That's a lot of money!

If no one claims the jackpot prize, each participating state in the Mega Millions game will get back all the money it contributed.
