Deadly Helicopter Crash in North Carolina

Author Cody

A deadly helicopter crash was reported on an interstate in North Carolina, with two fatalities.

According to WBTV, emergency crews responded to a helicopter crash today on the southbound lanes of Interstate 77 in south Charlotte.

Two people were pronounced dead on the scene.  No word on if they were the two people in the helicopter.  Initially, no other injuries were reported either. Ramps from I-85 north and south to I-77 south were closed and expected to be for an extended period of time.

Later, Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Chief Johnny Jennings reported no vehicles were involved on the interstate, as the helicopter crashed on the side of the roadway.

The pilot is a hero in my eyes. Witnesses indicated that the pilot made diversionary moves away from the highway to save lives. Because of his heroic acts, there were no further injuries or vehicles on the highway involved in the incident. https://t.co/yjpeN6zyBF

From the FAA:

A Robinson R44 helicopter crashed near I-77 South and Nations Ford Road in Charlotte, N.C., around 12:20 local time today. Two people were on board. The FAA and the National Transportation Safety Board will investigate. The NTSB will be in charge of the investigation and will provide additional updates. Neither agency identifies people involved in aircraft accidents.
