Your South Carolina Quarter Could be Worth Way More Than 25 Cents
You might want to think twice before tossing your loose coins into the next fountain that you walk by – you could be tossing away hundreds of dollars. Especially when it comes to quarters.
Between 1999 and 2008, a new state quarter was released every ten weeks. These state quarters featured an image that represented the state along with the year it became a part of the United States Union.
Well, in 2000, for five of those state coins the designs were minted. A minted coin means a coin with mistakes. Those five states were Massachusetts, Maryland, New Hampshire, Virginia, and our very own South Carolina.
The coin condition is critical. Mint state coins can be graded from 60 to 70, with 70 being perfect. MS outside of the grade is an abbreviation that stands for mint state.
According to the Professional Coin Grading Service, here’s what the South Carolina state quarter from the year 2000 went for at auction:
- South Carolina 2000-P MS69: $3,525
It can be pretty rare but there are still a fair amount of quarters floating around with errors. There have been errors calculated during the 2000s that you might want to keep an eye out for on the next South Carolina state quarter you come across.
Here are a few types of errors you could come across:
Off-Center South Carolina Error Quarter
This is one of the most common types of coin errors. This happens when the coin is struck off-center. Rather than the branding being on the coin, it could be going off the edge.
Off-center South Carolina quarter errors are worth anywhere from $15 to $100.
Doubled Die South Carolina Quarter Error
A South Carolina double die is where the design on the coin has distinctly doubled. A good place to spot them on a South Carolina quarter is:
- South Carolina state outline
- Carolina wren or the branch it stands on
- Palm
- Little star on the state
- Inscriptions
Clipped Planchet South Carolina Error Quarter
This happens when a coin has a clipped edge.
South Carolina quarters with clipped edge errors are worth $10 and up.
South Carolina Quarters With Missing Letters Or Missing Design Elements
Have you ever had a coin that was missing a letter or part of its image? Not many of these coins have been reported in South Carolina but they are definitely out there.
These errors range in value from $5 to $10. For rarer coins, like the 2005-P IN GOD WE RUST Kansas quarter it can be worth more than $200.
Next time you see a South Carolina state quarter, or any of the other four states with 2000s minted quarters, take a double take! You might just have some $200 quarters lying around.
