This swamp in Augusta was, at one time, a cattle farm from the 1950s to the early '70s, and the workers were from Gracewood, a state-run mental health center, and it was nicknamed "the Swamp Farm." Now, the old Swamp Farm In Augusta, Georgia, is known as the Phinizy Swamp Nature Park. A Visit To The Old Swamp Farm In Augusta, Georgia.

Alligators And Wetlands

Phinizy Swamp is an Augusta area treasure with boardwalks and trails, and you can see alligators, blue herons, river otters, and so much more. Phinizy has 1,100 acres of wetlands and woodlands and beautiful Spanish moss on cypress trees. There is a covered pavilion where you can sit and take in all of the nature around you.

I visited this past weekend and got there around 7:30 AM Saturday, which was so quiet then. I only saw one other person, and I walked around for about an hour, and it was so beautiful and relaxing. Every once in a while, , it's strange to hear the silence broken by the jets taking off or landing at nearby Bush Field.

Silos

The old silos near the parking lot are left over from the Swamp Farm days and are now covered in vines.  As you hike through the swamp area, which is very well-kept and safe

A Getaway In Our Backyard

If I saw something like this on the many road trips I take, I would definitely check it out, so we are fortunate to have it right here in our backyard. As mentioned before, it is a free getaway for a few hours and a great learning experience for the children. I hope you get to check it out soon!
