Slade Lake
Tee Gentry/BMGEdgefield, S.C. is full of history. Most people know it as the hometown of Strom Thurmond, one of ten governors that lived in Edgefield. Thurmond served as the 103rd governor of South Carolina from 1947 to 1951; after that, he served 48 years as a senator. This South Carolina Walking Trail Honors 10 Governors, and it's called the Ten Governors Rail Trail.
Ten Stone Markers
This is a cool trail, and it's an easy one. Plus, along the way, you get to know the ten state leaders from over the years. From the trailhead at the far end of the parking lot, ten stone markers commemorating South Carolina governors are spaced along the route.
Slade Lake
The view is nice, too, the walkway goes around Slade Lake where you can fish, and there are a couple of docks, too. No swimming is allowed Also, a fountain in the middle of the lake and plenty of friendly ducks roaming the grounds during your walk. This South Carolina Walking Trail Honors 10 Governors.
An Easy Walk
I walked the trail beginning at the Edgefield County Water And Sewer Department parking lot, and it took me about 45 minutes to finish. There is another starting point on Main Street at Piedmont Technical College. You'll also pass over the road on a wooden bridge, which is an old railroad trestle.
There's also lighting if you want to take an evening walk.
And A Nice Town Square
If you've never been to Edgefield, or if it's been a while, make sure you check out the downtown area wrapped around the historic town square. A distillery, a couple of restaurants and a nice green space make this one of my favorite places to visit. Well, that and the Edgefield Pool Room hamburgers and hot dogs. YUM!
