The Hollywood Of The South Is In Georgia

The town square in Covington, GA

Tee Gentry/BMG

This small town in Georgia is, first of all, beautiful. Antebellum homes line the streets in the downtown area, and the town square is the centerpiece of this little town. I got up early Saturday, headed out, and arrived in Covington, Georgia, around 7:30 AM. This is one of my favorite road trips so far; chances are, you've seen this small town before on TV and in the movies. The Hollywood Of The South Is In Georgia.

Vinny

One of my favorite movies of all time is My Cousin Vinny. Don't judge. Remember the suit scene where Vinny went looking for a new suit after the judge scolded him for mocking the court by wearing a too-small suit?  Also, the courthouse scenes? That was Covington. The inside courthouse scenes were in a warehouse; they transformed into a courtroom temporarily.

Vampires

The Vampire Diaries were also filmed in Covington. You can eat at Mystic Grill, as seen in the series,  which was a gathering place on the show. Also, grab an ice cream at Scoops and walk the town square. The bell tower you'll see on the show is the Newton County courthouse on the square. You can see it below in the pictures.

Bo And Luke

Speaking of the town square, all of the Dukes of Hazzard downtown chase scenes were done on the square in Covington. Also, the Boars Nest bar is now a church. If you want to see it, the address is 290 Flat Rock Road.

Other shows filmed in Covington are Sweet Magnolias, Heat of the Night, Remember the Titans and many more.  Over 200 movies and TV productions have been filmed in Covington. This small town in Georgia has been Mystic Falls, Virginia, Sparta, Mississippi, and Hazzard County, to name a few.
