One Of Georgia’s Most Historic Burial Grounds
On a side street near the Augusta Fairgrounds is one of Georgia’s Most historic burial grounds. Magnolia Cemetery is the final resting place for many Confederate Generals and is One Of Georgia’s Most Historic Burial Grounds.
1818
According to Augusta, Georgia website, the land where Magnolia Cemetery is located was at one time part of a plantation, with the first official burial in August of 1818. Academy of Richmond County owned the first two blocks, and they sold it to the City Council of Augusta for $800 in 1817.
Magnolia is over 60 acres, and it’s fascinating to see. The property also includes a Greek cemetery, five Jewish cemeteries, a Masonic Lodge section, and several church sections in this one cemetery.
Confederate Generals
Many Confederate Generals are buried here, also General Thomas Glascock, who served in the War of 1812 and the First Seminole War of 1817-1818.
Other noteworthy individuals buried at Magnolia Cemetery include Paul Hamilton Hayne , a Southern poet from Charleston that settled in Grovetown. Mr Hayne passed away in Grovetown on July 6, 1886.

The cemetery is located at 702 3rd Street in Augusta. Summer hours are 9 AM to 8 PM, Monday through Sunday. Visiting Magnolia is free.
