‘In The Dark’ – What Cody’s Watching
Every now and then I like to give you a little insight into what I’m watching. I tend to lean more toward documentaries and true crime. But I also like to have a show that’s a little less intense that I can enjoy while I’m on the treadmill, or just hanging around the house alone. My latest show is In The Dark on Netflix.
Choosing A New Show
I was watching Emily In Paris and binged it really fast. In fact, I didn’t even realize I’d finished it. So, once that was over, I was at a loss for what to watch next. I had a few shows on my list on Netflix. At first, I started watching Manifest. I really liked it and got 2 or 3 episodes in when I thought, “David would probably like this show.” So I stopped watching that one by myself and got David up to speed.
But that left me with the dilemma– what can I watch now? In The Dark had been on my list for a while, but I hadn’t heard much about it and wasn’t sure about it. I started watching it… and now I’m hooked!
In The Dark On Netflix
In The Dark is a 4 season series you can find on Netflix. The story centers on Murphy Mason (played by actress Perry Mattfeld). The Netflix description sums up the series: “Murphy Mason is making the least out of life, until her friend is murdered. Forced to investigate, she finds herself entangled in Chicago’s drug world.”
Murphy is living a pretty hard life. She drinks a lot and seems to be pretty miserable. And to top it off, Murphy is blind. But the show is interesting in the way it displays how Murphy adapts and engages in the world, despite her disability.
When her friend is murdered, it only leads to even more complications for Murphy. Her frustration with police investigation leads her to do her own investigation.
My Review
Even though I wasn’t sure about the series to begin with, I am really enjoying it. It has definitely thrown me for a few loops. It’s got a great balance of mystery, crime, romance, and relationship highs and lows.
I was surprised to learn that Perry Mattfeld isn’t actually blind. But watching her, you can’t tell that. She plays the role very well. When I Googled to see if she was actually blind, I read that some people were unhappy that they selected an actress that wasn’t actually blind. I think they did audition blind actresses… but ultimately, they went with Mattfeld. And there is another character in the show that is actually blind.
I was a little disappointed when I did a search and learned that there won’t be a 5th season. According to Wikipedia, the show was created by Corinne Kingsbury for The CW and premiered in April of 2019. But according to New Vision Theatres, the series was cancelled due to the merger of Warner Bros. Discovery.
I will say, this has definitely been a series that surprised me. I didn’t expect to like it as much as I do. And the fact that I haven’t heard more people talk about it surprises me. Maybe it’s the fact that, yet again, I’m a little late to the game, since it came out in 2019.
If you’re looking for something to watch, I’d say this is definitely worth giving a shot! I’ve really enjoyed it so far, and I’m already 8 episodes into the second season. Any time I have a little bit of time, I’m watching the next episode.
