Just outside of Asheville, NC (30 minutes) is a small town Budget Travel named in 2010 as one of the best small towns in America. Brevard, NC. Just over the South Carolina line is a mountain town with unique shops, coffee houses, a theatre, and beautiful mountain scenery. This Small Mountain Town In North Carolina Is One Of The Coolest In America.

Where's Andy?

Brevard is in Transylvania County and has the highest concentration of waterfalls in North America, with over 200 waterfalls, and I didn't get a picture of one of them. Next time! The downtown area has a Mayberry feel and even has an O.P. Taylor toy store and a Mayberry restaurant. It is a very walkable downtown with plenty to do. Plus, the cool mountain air was nice after all the hot days recently in Augusta.

White Squirrels

Another thing that makes Brevard unique is white squirrels. Legend has it that a guy with a traveling carnival was traveling through Brevard many years ago and had a couple of white squirrels as part of an act, and one of the squirrels escaped, and the rest is history. If you want to see one, they say Brevard College is a favorite place for the squirrels. If you can't get enough of these unique creatures, you can attend the annual White Squirrel Festival each June in Brevard. The Southeast Tourism Society has recognized it as one of the top 20 festivals.

If You Go

Accommodations in Brevard include cabins of all sizes, hotels, B&B's and luxury inns, all with great views. Many are close to the downtown area. There are lots of fun things to do in the downtown area. As I mentioned earlier, it's very walkable.
