Coming up with names for dogs can be a big deal. Or at least it is for many. I know when we were coming up with names for our dogs, we wanted something that wasn’t super common. But we also wanted something that represents things we love… and that’s how Harley and Waylon got their names! David loves motorcycles, and we both love old country music. I found this video today though of comedian John Crist talking about SEC Football fans naming their pets, and I thought it was hilarious!
I actually know some people who have named their pets after their favorite team, coach, or player. But I love John’s additional commentary on each name — including things like we paid a lot for this one, or we’ve been stuck with this one for a while.

I absolutely love when people get creative with their dogs’ names. And I love to hear the story behind it. It’s so much better than just giving them a traditional dog name like Max or Spot.
Growing up, we had a few unique pet names. Like a cat named Sierra, because there was a Christian band that I liked at the time with that name. And, we did have a dog named Sparky, and I feel like that’s more of a common dog name. Later on we’d have a dog that looked similar to Sparky, but he had one blue eye, and my mom said it gave her the willies… So, we named him Willie. We also got my grandmother’s dog when she couldn’t take care of him, and his name was Boots. And throughout the years, my sister had a few dogs: Max, Peanut, and Peaches.
One of my favorite ones was a solid black cat we had named Stonewall. Our last name is Jackson, so it was Stonewall Jackson! We thought that was pretty original and unique. Stonewall’s mom had a more traditional cat name though, we named her Sassy.
Everytime I get a new pet, I always search for unique pet names. Unlike naming a child, I feel like you have a bit more room to get creative with pet names! Not that you can’t name your kid something unique… but that could wind up with them getting teased for life! Pets are a different story!
