Augusta has been named the drunkest city in Georgia. I don't know how I feel about this. Should we be offended? We're the biggest drunks in the whole state? Y'all know that Georgia is a pretty big state right? How the heck did we "take the top honor"? Don't worry, I've found the stats for you. Let's dig into the data, shall we?
How They Got The Info
The folks at 247Tempo did some digging and reviewed the percentage of men and women who reported binge drinking in the metro areas of each state. As far as the state of Georgia goes, Augusta is the drunkest city. According to 247 Tempo's research, in Augusta 19.1% of adults reported heavy or binge drinking. Thats above the state average of 17.8%.
Look I know we like to have a good time here in the CSRA, but I don't think we're a bunch of drunks. Sure you see some people who've had a few too many at a concert or event, but its not all of us. They're trying to tell me that we get more drunk than people in Atlanta, or Savannah? Have you seen the St. Patrick's Day celebration in Savannah? That should give them first place right there!
What About Other Southern States?
Let's take a look at some of our neighboring states, and see what their drunkest cities are.
- Alabama's drunkest city is the area of Daphne, Fairhope and Foley. These are all in Baldwin County in Alabama.
- South Carolina's drunkest city is Charleston.
- Tennessee's drunkest city is Chattanooga. (What?! have y'all ever been to Nashville?)
- Florida's drunkest city is Sarasota.
It wasn't long ago that Augusta was one of the unhappiest cities in America. If you missed that article, you can read it here. So you're saying we're all a bunch of unhappy drunks here? I'm just not buying it. I've lived here all my life, and I can't get with the perception that people are getting about us based on these articles. However, if you do want to enjoy a drink responsibly here in the CSRA, these are some of my favorite places to go.
Dub’s Favorite Augusta Bars
What are my favorite Augusta bars? Where are my favorite places to grab a cold beverage here in town? I've thought about it and come up with this list. Now these are just bars. These aren't bars and restaurants. Because if we're talking restaurants too, then this list would be pretty dang long.
I love a good neighborhood bar vibe. A place thats not too big, however I don't want a place thats super small either. Its important to be able to at least move around in the place. Another thing that helps a place make the list is live music. There are a few of those places on this list.
Atmosphere is really important to me, so these bars will have a really cool atmosphere. I also like a place where I can have a good experience. And I can tell you, I've had great experiences at all of these places, hence why they made my favorite bars list.
These are places that I've been going for years, and I can highly recommend them. In fact, these are the places I recommend most. So if you're looking for bars with neighborhood vibes, great atmosphere, live music and good drinks, then these will probably be some of your favorite spots too.

The Indian Queen
I've been going to Indian Queen since they opened. Its such a cool vibe there. I've had so many awesome times there over the years. In fact Indian Queen is where I met my wife.
Stillwater Tap Room
This is one of my favorite bars in Downtown Augusta. Its a great place to try a great variety of beer and cocktails. I've heard some great live music there over the years. Its one of my favorite places to chill and enjoy a drink.
Metro Pub
Another one of my favorite Downtown Augusta spots is Metro. If we grab dinner somewhere downtown, then odds are we're probably going to get a drink at Metro. You can even grab a great coffee there as well.
Hyatt House Rooftop Bar
So I know that this a hotel, but its got an awesome rooftop bar. One of the best rooftop bars in the area. I love the view from Hyatt House. Its a great place to be really at any time of the year.
