Fried What?

The Salley Chitlin' Strut celebrates chitterlings, which are fried hog intestines. I know...me, too. I can't imagine eating one. But, people come from all over just to taste one or a plate of them. Hog Heaven: South Carolina Town of 357 Increases to 40,000 In November.

By the way, the only picture I have from Salley is the shrimp photo...Ha! But, I guess if you're not into chitlins, you can find some shrimp.

All About The Chitlin'

According to Southern Living , chitlins, also known as chitterlings, are the intestines of a pig that have been cooked. Rarely, cow intestines are also used for chitlins. They are usually boiled down, fried up, and served with apple cider vinegar and hot sauce. Chitlins have a strong, pungent smell, which is heightened when cooking. Often, onions are used in the cooking process to make the smell less strong.

Chitlins and Backroads

This is a great festival with plenty to do for the entire family, and the city of Salley does this event right. Plus, you get to take some backroads and relax on your way to this event. Enjoy the parade and the atmosphere, and maybe even try a chitlin', if you're brave enough. At least you can say you've had one!
