The Augusta Riverwalk in Downtown Augusta now has not one arch, but two new arches that have been added to the walkway to let you know exactly where you are.
One of the signs arches over 8th Street. This shows the beginning of where the Riverwalk starts when visitors come to the area. The other arch is placed over 10th Street. The arches will also be lit so people can see them at night.
These signs were approved to be placed on the river walk back in May of 2016. They were approved for half a million dollars in sales tax money. They have just now been installed due to numerous factors such as construction cost and the pandemic.
If you are familiar with the Augusta area, you will know that the Augusta Riverwalk has gone through a recent name change. While it wasn’t a quick process with the name change alone, commissioners voted to change the name of the Riverwalk to the Edward M. McIntyre, Sr. Riverwalk Park
The name change came about from the son of former Augusta Mayor McIntyre who submitted a petition to rename Augusta’s Riverwalk after his father. In a 6-3 vote, Augusta Commission members decided Tuesday to rename the Riverwalk after McIntyre.
That name change is not reflected on these new arches, as the arches just say “Riverwalk”.
There are no plans to change the arches to include the official new name at this time.
