Carrie Underwood Gets Emotional Over George Michael
Carrie Underwood got very emotional when talking about one of her musical heroes, George Michael, just before she paid tribute to him at the November Rock and Roll Hall of Fame induction.
Carrie posted a video clip of an interview with ABC before the show happened. She posted the clip to Instagram on New Year’s Day when the event reaired on ABC.
In the clip, an uncharacteristically emotional Underwood said, “There is so much about George Michael’s voice and music that I feel is responsible for so much of me as an artist.”
She continued, “I did get a chance to meet George during one of his tours. I was very shy because I felt like if I started speaking, I would cry on him, and I didn’t want to do that. I didn’t want that to be my impression. But I feel like one of my biggest regrets in my career will be not having gotten to sing with him.”
Carrie concluded, “I’m not a crier in general. I guess I’m just hyper-emotional tonight. Their music was just so influential to me. It was definitely beyond an honor to be a part of this tonight. I just hope we represented something that he would have been proud of.”

In the Rock Hall tribute to the late George Michael at the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame ceremony in November, after R&B singer Miguel sang “Careless Whisper” and Adam Levine of Maroon 5 sang “Faith,” Carrie took the stage to perform “One More Try.”
Underwood posted photos from the event in early November and wrote on Instagram, “I hope @georgemofficial would’ve liked this… I never really got to tell him what his voice meant to mine…and one of my greatest regrets is never having gotten the chance to sing with him. But it was an honor to sing in his place to help welcome him into the @rockhall last night. It is beyond deserved…”
She added, “Also, I may have made a fool of myself to @andrewjohnridgeley whilst fangirling a bit … but he was so kind. What a night! A heartfelt congrats to all the inductees!!! #RockHall2023.” Andrew Ridgeley was George Michael’s bandmate in the pop group Wham!, and he did the speech presenting Michael at the Rock Hall event.
