Rucker isn’t one to garner controversial headlines, especially of a legal nature. His brushes with anything in the realm of controversy are very few and far between. In June 2020, he released a statement in the wake of the murder of George Floyd. In the statement, he shared how he experienced racism “from kindergarten to the life I live today.”
Two months later, he told Beasley Media Group’s Nancy Brooks about how many people in the country music world reached out to him because of his statement.
“They didn’t call me to ask me to exonerate them or anything,” said Rucker. “They called me to talk about it and wanted to know what I thought and really were honest and straight up and said some things that I don’t think they ever thought they would say to me. And it was something that really, for me was heartwarming because I realized this is really making a difference.”
In July 2020, Rucker announced he and wife Beth Leonard were getting a divorce. The split was rather uneventful. In a November 2023 interview with Apple Music, Rucker said of Leonard, “I always say, (my ex-wife) is a saint. She’s an amazing human being, and she’s a great mom, and we get through life.”
