A Delicious Hot Dog Spot In South Carolina You Weren’t Looking For
Often, we get into routines and fail to explore the things around us. But it’s amazing what can happen if you expand your horizons and get curious about what’s around you. That’s how we discovered a unique hot dog spot in South Carolina!
A Simple Road Trip – So Much To Discover
On Friday, we decided to make our first trip to Edisto Beach. We left super early so we’d arrive at the beach around 8 a.m. When you’re going somewhere you’ve never been, there’s a lot you can discover.
For a big part of the ride, there wasn’t much to see. The GPS had taken us on some “backroads” and through the countryside. We often comment on what the people that live in those areas do for groceries and entertainment. But it was still a nice, easy drive.
As we went through Barnwell, South Carolina, I commented that I had been to Barnwell before. I actually went on a mission trip with my church youth group years ago. But I didn’t remember much about the town at all. That’s when we were driving along US-278, and I just happened to notice a sign the said “Tonya’s Diggty Dawgz.”
At first, we simply laughed about the name. But then we started talking about places to get the best hot dogs. I will say, I’m not the expert when it comes to those type of things. Tee Gentry has often been the one to discover great hot dogs! But I did a quick Google search for “Best Hot Dog In South Carolina.” As I scrolled through some of the top search results… there was Tonya’s Diggty Dawgz.
I wound up looking at her website and Facebook page as we continued on our way to Edisto. I pulled up pictures and commented on all the delicious sounding menu items. Not only did she have hot dogs, but she had funnel cakes. Now, I don’t typically go out of my way for a funnel cake. I usually only get them at fairs and festivals. But there was something about Tonya’s that made me really want one.
We made it to Edisto around 8 a.m. but I will say, we talked about Tonya’s Diggity Dawgz quite a bit. At Edisto, we spent a few hours enjoying the sun and the waves before packing up to head home. And we made sure to put in Tonya’s Diggity Dawgz as a stop along our route back.
Tonya’s Diggty Dawgz – Hot Dog Spot In South Carolina
I pulled up the Facebook page, and saw that she would be closing at 4 p.m. that day. Thankfully, the GPS had us arriving at 3:15 p.m. I will say, if you’re not paying attention, you could easily blink and miss the place. It’s a simple little building, kind of like a tiny house. But there are some flags and signage by the road.
When we got there, it was just Ms. Tonya herself. She did let us know she was running low on chili. That was okay with me, because I tend to be a little picky about my chili anyway. I ordered a plain dawg with nacho cheese and bacon. My stepdaughter ordered the same. Then my fiance ordered the Diggity Dawg. We added on a large order of bacon cheese fries… and of course, we had to order a funnel cake. We ordered the funnel cake topped with Oreos, Hershey’s, and whipped cream.
Ms. Tonya told us she’d wave to us once it was ready. So we went and got back in the truck. Once we saw her wave, we got back out and grabbed the food. She thanked us and told us “Don’t hurt yourselves.” We’d soon realize what she meant!
Once we started digging in, we were amazed at how much food there was! I was glad we only ordered one large fry, and only one hot dog each. There was plenty of food. And it was all delicious.
The hot dog I got with nacho cheese and bacon was covered in bacon. It wasn’t just a few bacon bits.
My fiance’s dogs were covered with lettuce, tomato, pickles, and condiments. I actually wound up having him pull over and let me drive so he could eat his food before it got cold.
We saved the funnel cake for when we got home. And as good as it was then, I can only imagine how delicious it was when it was hot. She used crumbled-up Oreo cookies and Hershey bar pieces. It was heavenly.
Thankfully, Tonya’s Diggity Dawgz is only about an hour from our house, because I’m pretty sure we’re going to be making that trip back to try even more from her menu soon!
