History Of Krispy Kreme

Krispy Kreme has a mission "to make the most awesome doughnuts on the planet every single day." They also give back to communities with fundraising opportunities and philanthropic work.

Krispy Kreme got its start in North Carolina back in 1937 by a man named Vernon Rudolph. He started by selling his doughnuts to local grocery stores. But the demand would grow and those passing his bakery would ask for him to sell directly from there. Eventually, he would cut a hole and sell the doughnuts to customers on the sidewalk.

The doughnuts would go on to become an iconic sweet treat enjoyed the world over. But to begin with, the expansion led to some inconsistencies, despite using the same recipe. That led Rudolph to create a mix plant to deliver dry mix to each store.

A few years after Rudolph passed away, the company was sold to Beatrice Foods Company, but just a few years later it would be bought back by a group of early franchisees.

The company would open its first store in New York City in 1996, and expand to California in 1999. In 2001, the first international store opened in Ontario, Canada. By 2003, they expanded even further and opened their first locations outside of North America.

The Friday Five- Top CSRA Donut Places

What are the Top CSRA Donut Places? We let y'all rank them with the first ever "Friday Five" this morning. Every Friday we'll do a different Top Five list that y'all will put together with your calls and Facebook comments. With today being National Donut Day, we figured we'd list donuts today.

Cody and I started the list with our votes. Our votes for the best donut place in the CSRA was Krispy Kreme. We both voted for the same place. We're not saying that there aren't other great donuts out there, but Krispy Kreme is our favorite. Would y'all agree with us, would Krispy Kreme win, or would another donut shop claim the number one spot?

We took your calls and counted all of your Facebook comment votes, and thats how this list came about. There were a few places that got votes, but didn't make the Top Five. Some of those were Dunkin', Haute Donuts, and Little Bake Shop. Then we got into the ones with the most votes. Thats where this list came from.

Here is another list of the best donuts in the CSRA, lets see how ours compares.

So what are the Top CSRA Donut Places? This is the list that all of you helped us put together. Heres the "Friday Five" for this week.

Sheila's Baking Co.

It was close, but Sheilas at 434 Georgia Ave. in North Augusta won the Top CSRA Donut Place! Check out their full menu here.

Krispy Kreme

I told you it was close, and it was! Krispy Kreme only lost by two votes! Of course Krispy Kreme has several CSRA locations including Washington Rd, Peach Orchard Rd and Whiskey Rd in Aiken. If the "Hot Now" light is on, make sure you stop in!

Belair Donuts

Our next door neighbor here at the station came in at Number 3 on the list. Belair Donuts are always great, and they open at 5:30, so we can grab some before we start the show! They have two locations. One in Augusta and one in Grovetown. Here's their website.

Pineland Bakery

I'll be honest, before this morning I'd never heard of Pineland Bakery, but now I want to try them out next time I'm in Waynesboro. They're located at 721 W 6th Street. Here's a link to their Facebook page.

Heroes Donuts

I've heard of Heroes Donuts, but I've never tried them. The fact that they made the Top 5, I think I need to change that. They're located in the La Pavilion shopping center at 3328 Washington Rd. You can check out their Facebook page here.
