The Augusta branch of Toys for Tots is dealing with a severe shortage, with 853 kids still needing gifts before December 15. It's their most significant challenge in 40 years, triggered by the impact of a recent storm.

Struggling families have overwhelmed the charity with requests. Toys for Tots Augusta received over 800 applications.

Former Marine Anne Woods, who's been running the local branch since 1986, says supplies are running low. Their biggest need? Gifts for older children, ages nine and up, are under stocked, leaving 400 kids needing assistance.

Kids' wish lists look different these days. In a recent interview, Woods told WRDW-TV, “This year, children are asking for comforter sets, shoes, underwear, socks, you know, they're asking for stuff that they actually need.” Children want practical items, indicating a shift from the expected toys and games.

For Woods, this isn't just charity work - it's a calling driven by faith to help kids having a rough time. When asked about her dedication to the program, she said she does it because “it makes me feel good.”

Since 1947, the Marine Corps Reserve's Christmas program has made millions of Christmas mornings special across America. Augusta's team keeps that tradition going.

After distributing all the toys for Christmas, Toys for Tots estimates that 30,000 kids will receive gifts through the program. Learn more about how to donate to Toys for Tots and help the Augusta team achieve their goal.
