Beginning in the 2025-26 school year, Augusta University will launch indoor track and field teams. The addition marks the first new athletic program in over a decade.

"This is a huge step for our program," said Jacob Burgamy, head cross country and track & field coach, in the Augusta Jags release. "Our athletes are very excited about having an additional opportunity to compete for a championship each year and have another full season of competition."

Burgamy, who stepped in as head coach in March 2023, will direct both teams. His coaching has led to three consecutive Peach Belt Conference wins in men's cross country.

Two stars stand out in recent competitions. Jordan Robertson became the program's first cross country All-American in the fall of 2024, and Avery Jaynes became the first NCAA Track & Field All-American in the spring of 2025.

Athletic Director Ryan Erlacher sees bright prospects ahead. "Under Coach Burgamy's excellent leadership, I have no doubt our indoor programs will be extremely competitive right away," he said in the August jags release.

This move puts the school in line with other NCAA Division II institutions, with year-round training and competition options.
