Getty ImagesThe Richmond County Board of Education will close T.W. Josey High School and Murphey Middle School when the 2026-27 school year begins. A college and career academy will be built on the same campus.
High schoolers from across the district can attend. The academy opens doors to career pathways, hands-on training, and programs that match what employers need.
T.W. Josey High School started classes in 1964. Murphey Middle opened in 1953. Both buildings share a campus at 1701 15th St. in Augusta.
The board's long-range facilities master plan contains this proposal. District leaders picked the campus as the site for construction.
Kids at the closed schools will transfer elsewhere. Bayvale Elementary School students would continue at Langford-Tutt Middle School, then move to the Academy of Richmond County.
Wheeless Road Elementary School students would attend Richmond Hill Middle School before transferring to Butler High School. Those at Wilkinson Gardens Elementary School would head to Hornsby Middle School and finish at Laney High School.
A public meeting was held at Josey High to educate Augusta residents on what the closure means. District officials talked through the plan with neighbors and families who were present.
