Two patients at the VA Augusta Health Care System will appear on posters promoting national disabled veteran sporting events in 2026. Dr. Lisa Maddox gets featured in materials for the National Disabled Veterans Winter Sports Clinic. Justin Hall will show up on the poster for the National Disabled Veterans Golf Clinic.
The winter sports clinic runs from April 4-11 in Colorado. Iowa hosts the golf clinic Sept. 13-18.
"It's an honor and a privilege to be selected from over 300 veterans who attended the National Disabled Winter Sports Clinic! I was beyond humbled when I found out about it and saw the poster at the same time," said Dr. Lisa Maddox, according to Augusta Good News.
Dr. Lisa Maddox has participated in wheelchair curling, rugby, pickleball, tennis, and softball. Medals came her way in competitions. Justin Hall also competes as an accomplished athlete through the VA system.
VA Augusta runs a Recreation Therapy program. It works with the Spinal Cord Injury Unit to support adaptive sports and recreational activities. Therapists go with participants to national Veterans adaptive sports competitions and clinics to provide on-site support. Both featured athletes participate as regular competitors in national VA disabled and wheelchair games.
Dr. Lisa Maddox encouraged other veterans to get involved in recreational opportunities outside sports. "The VA has a lot of adaptive activities for veterans with various disabilities. If you, your spouse, or both of you are veterans, please reach out to your primary care and your recreational therapist. There is even a National Veterans Creative Arts Festival in Columbia, SC, this year from June 9-14. That's a wonderful thing because not all of these clinics involved sports," she said.
