Not only is the church fascinating… those trees and hanging moss just add to the beauty of the place!
Cody/BMG AugustaOn Saturday, we decided to take a day trip to the beach. We headed out around 6 a.m. toward Beaufort, South Carolina. Our plan was to meet our friends at their house on St. Helena Island. On the way, my friend texted and said that since it was just a day trip, we might enjoy Hunting Island more. Then she called and asked where we were. She told me that we weren't too far from the Old Sheldon Church Ruins. I looked it up, and sure enough, we were only a mile or so away.
Old Sheldon Church Ruins
When my friend called, we were stuck by the train in Yemassee, South Carolina. It was perfect timing though because otherwise, we might have missed out on seeing the Old Sheldon Church Ruins! My friend told us it was a neat place to stop and take some pictures, so of course, that's what we did! Since we weren't on any strict timeline, we were down to stop and see whatever we came across! The weather was beautiful, no one was out there. It was so peaceful and beautiful!
I love historical places and was fascinated by the headstones. I noticed that there wasn't any order to where the graves were. They seemed sporadically placed throughout the area. Another thing I pointed out... the headstones for the women. Most of them mentioned the woman's name followed by "wife of." It just made me think of how different things are today. Back then, women were known for who they were married to. As someone who considers herself pretty independent-- I don't want to be defined by who I'm married to! I also found it pretty interesting that they put how old they were ("in the 22nd year of her age").
Next Trip
I'll definitely be doing a little more digging on the history of the Old Sheldon Church Ruins... plus, my friend also mentioned Saint Helena Parish Chapel of Ease Ruins. We passed it on our way home... but didn't stop this time around. That's definitely going to be on our list for our next trip! Supposedly, the Chapel of Ease is haunted... and that's right up my alley!
