Jason Kempin/Getty ImagesThese are some of the best nicknames in country music. If you're a country star and you don't have a nickname, are you even a country star? I think that the country genre has more nicknames than any other genre of music. In fact a lot of times we'll call the artist by their nickname on the air and y'all will still know exactly who it is.
Some of the nicknames make plenty of sense, and some of them have a backstory behind them. I know the backstory behind some of the names, but for other, I've got questions. Like for example, they called George Jones "The Possum" because his eyes were so close together and because of his nose, they thought he looked like a possum.
Merle Haggard was called "The Hag", I think that one is pretty self explanatory. Johnny Cash was called "The Man In Black" because he always wore black on stage. George Strait's nickname is "King George". The man has over 60 number one songs, yeah I'd call him "King" too! These aren't so hard to understand where the nickname came from, but there are others that aren't so easy.
