There is a place in Blackville, South Carolina that is special. So special, that it has been said it’s has healing powers. This is God’s Acre Healing Springs. Located on a road that was fine when vehicles were smaller, but now it seems too small, but that makes this area even better for me. I arrived in Blackville around 8:30 on a Sunday morning and there were about 7 or 8 people at the springs. Each filling large containers full of water and taking them to their trucks and cars. Some were loading 15 or 20 of the mostly 5-gallon jugs that one guy told me he gets at WalMart.

“My mom started bringing me here when I was a kid and I’ve been coming to ever since”, said one guy I struck up a conversation with. He continued, “I truly believe it has healing powers, just taste it, it’s special”. So I filled my coffee tumbler up with some of the water and it was good, almost different than regular water. One guy was telling me about the history of this place as another filled the back of his truck with bottles full of this special water…God’s water. He told me he gets it for himself and his mother, as he was walking toward the water to refill. He told me the water used to just come up from the ground, but Barnwell County added raised pipes from the ground and it’s easier to fill containers with it now.

There was a peaceful feeling to this place and everyone was friendly as they talked about this great little stop on this isolated backroad. As a matter of fact, they acted like they were eager to talk about it. It was a great way for me to start my Sunday. In fact, I thought, these Artesian springs are special. The springs got its name during the American Revolution. Six men we injured badly in battle and a General sent them inland from Charleston to bury them when they passed away from their injuries. When some Native Americans found the still badly wounded men they took them to the springs. Six months later the General was astonished when the men returned and were healthy and strong.

There is a historical marker by the road that says “The waters by analysis are exceptionally pure and contain healthful minerals.”

The water is free and open 7 days a week, 365 days a year. God’s Acre Healing Springs is a very special place.
