Luke Combs gave great detail in a new interview about the day his second son Beau Lee was born. He was in Australia on tour at the time and missed it.
Luke told Zane Lowe in a new interview, "I'll never forget the craziest day, probably, in my life, close to it. One of the best and one of the worst days in my life at the same time was, interestingly enough, and it's so hard to wrap my mind around it."
Combs explained the day by telling Lowe he woke up early in the morning in his Australia hotel room, and he had a text from his wife Nicole saying, "I'm so sorry, I really tried to not have the baby while you're gone." Luke added, "God, dude, it sucked."
He continued that he did get to see the baby born on Facetime, noting it "sucked" because the baby was two and a half weeks early, and he was supposed to be home, and he wasn't.
Luke explained that it was "real hard" for him, and he didn't cover missing the birth in his new Fathers & Sons album because it was "really hard for me to deal with."
The country superstar did say that during that time, he and his wife Nicole both had "a really great support system" full of their closest friends and family.
He said that the support system "made it a lot easier," adding that he, too, had people with him and that the birth went great with "no hiccups in the process or anything."
The singer said, "God, it was a hard day," but was "so lucky" that a lot of his closest friends now work for him. And so he had a really great support system. He explained that his two best friends work as his personal assistant and guitar tech and are both dads as well. "I was able to be with them through that whole thing."
Looking back on the experience now, Combs said it was a "defining moment in my life for sure." It said in a lot of ways that it sums up some of the bad parts of the music business — the "leaving and your schedule's crazy."
He concluded of the tough travel, "It's not like I can drop everything I'm doing and fly 18 hours home."
