Drew Baldridge Talks About His Hit Song ‘She’s Somebody’s Daughter’ With The Kicks Wake Up Krew
Drew Baldridge has just scored his first number-one song with ‘She’s Somebody’s Daughter’. The story behind how this song got to number one is incredible. Earlier this morning we talked to Drew about the song, and about performing on night two of the 25th anniversary celebration of Kicks99’s Guitar Pull.

Dub [00:00:00] It’s your Wake Up Krew, Dub and Cody. So now the majority of the cats are out of the bag. As far as Kicks99’s Guitar Pull.
Cody [00:00:08] Yes. Two amazing nights.
Dub [00:00:09] Yeah. And one of the artists that’s going to be lighting up night two of the 25th anniversary of Kicks99’s Guitar Pull is one of the hottest artists on the scene right now. Our boy Drew Baldridge. What’s going on, man?
Drew Baldridge [00:00:22] Hey, man, how y’all doing?
Dub [00:00:24] You know what. We’re good. We’re doing good. Almost as good as Drew Baldridge with this huge song. “She’s Somebody’s Daughter”.
Drew Baldridge [00:00:32] Oh, gosh. Thank you so much. What a journey this song has been. And it’s just crazy to think, you know, we got a number one song. And, you know, I’ve been in Nashville for 13 years chasing the dream and hoping that my music would get played on the radio. And now to think man we have we went number one. Like how crazy, how crazy.
Dub [00:00:49] Well Drew, here’s what I want to do real quick. Let’s talk about just how crazy that is. Because, you know, we talk about it all the time. Artists get number one songs and, you know, songs going up the chart, making it to number one, all that kind of stuff. But yours is special and it’s special for a bunch of reasons. I would love for you to tell the story about how this song came to be and how it got to number one and all the work that you put into it.
Drew Baldridge [00:01:13] Yeah, man. So this is a song I honestly, I just wrote it about after meeting my wife’s dad. At that time, she was just my girlfriend. I met him and you know, I remember driving back to Nashville and thinking like, man, you know, if I break her heart, I’ll be breaking her mom’s heart and her daddy’s heart, too. I want to write, you know, kind of a song is a message to myself, too. Don’t mess it up. You know, treat her right. And that’s what we did. And I wrote the song all the way back in 2018, and I, put it out on my old record, my old record company in 2019, and then the record company I was on closed down three months later. So the song did nothing. It just sat there in 2019. It was always one of my favorites. And me and my wife, you know, fast forward a couple of years later, we get married in 2021, and I make a wedding version of this song just so she can dance to it with her dad on our wedding night. And that’s what happened. She danced to it with her dad. I sit side stage and cried like a baby. And you know, after losing that record deal, I still didn’t get one, you know? So when we’re getting married, I don’t have a manager booking agent. I don’t have a record label. I’m just trying to figure it out. You know, it’s getting really close to just being like, you know what? I’m done. I’m done with this. I’m just going to figure, you know, do something else and try to provide for a family. And I, I posted on TikTok and kind of had a last minute strolls, like, I’m playing in anybody’s backyard. They want to play, you know, that wants me to play for them. And man, I thought I’d get 5 or 10 requests. We ended up getting thousands of requests, and I went around the country for three years and played in over 300 people’s backyards, just making a guitar, and it was one of the coolest tours I ever did. And, you know, during that time, my wife dances on our wedding night with her dad, this song, and we put it up on TikTok. And overnight it ended up getting like 10 million views. And I can’t believe it. You know, we were on our honeymoon when I posted it. Woke up the next morning, almost 10 million views and I freaking out. I’m thinking we’re going to get a call from every record company in Nashville. And it didn’t happen that well. That wasn’t my story. Nobody really called us. And so middle of last year, I had this crazy idea as well. Screw it. I’m just going to create my own record label and send this on country radio by myself. And that’s what we did. I just hired my own staff and tried doing it myself. Everybody told me I was freaking crazy, which I thought I was. Do, you know, everybody’s like, this can’t be done. It’s never been done before. It’s going to be impossible. And I was like, well, I just believe in this song, and I believe in the message of this song about treating women right, knowing their worth. And, you know, I never thought, you know, that was August 21st of last year, and here we are a year later and we have a number one song. I never dreamed that would have happened. I think when we were starting, I was like, man, if I can just get top 40, what a great story that would be. I could be a top 40 country artist. I’ve never been that. Now, like I said, man, we have a number one song and it’s on our with our own record label and it’s a song about my wife and I just honestly, I’m just so blessed and humbled and I just can’t believe it’s happening.
Dub [00:03:55] Well, man, it couldn’t have happened to a nicer guy. We here at Kicks 99. We’ve been in the Drew Baldrige business for a long time. Back when you were on that old record label, you played, you know, several shows for us here, including our Kicks 99 Guitar Pull Parking Lot party. You’ve gone from the parking lot party years ago to now, the main stage on night two of the 25th anniversary of Kicks99’s Guitar Pull. How cool is that?
Drew Baldridge [00:04:17] It is so awesome. And you know, I got to come down there and, the beginning of this year and play for y’all in a really awesome, I think it was I can’t remember the name of the place we played out. It was a really awesome theater.
Dub [00:04:28] Oh, is the Columbia County Performing Arts performing arts center? Yeah, yeah.
Drew Baldridge [00:04:32] Performing arts center. It was incredible. You had so many great listeners there. Like, I just, I love I love coming to Augusta and I love playing for y’all. You know, we can’t wait to get down there and play for you guys again.
Dub [00:04:40] You said you played in about 300 people’s backyard. Something like that. Yeah. You got any crazy stories from playing in people’s backyards over the years?
Drew Baldridge [00:04:50] Man, I’ll be honest. It was like they were all special in their own way, you know? I mean, we would show up and some would be, you know, just immediate family be like 4 or 5 people, and then we’d sell some and there’d be. 600 people in a field just ready to throw down. Yeah. It was all, you know, they were all so different and also unique in their own way. You know, I will say we went to Colorado one time and played for a family in Colorado. And, you know, they obviously, you know, I have to charge to help with our expenses, all our travel and my guy coming out, you know, tour manager coming out. And we got home and the first one we played for canceled the check. And I remember just being like, wow, okay. We just flew out to Colorado and played for them. Then we got back and they canceled today. So that’s probably the the craziest story of just like, wow, I can’t believe that that would really happen.
Dub [00:05:35] What a jerk. Like I’m just going to go and say it. That’s kind of a jerk move.
Drew Baldridge [00:05:39] Yeah, yeah. We went all the way out to Colorado, played for them. They did it. And then they got a free show out of it.
Dub [00:05:44] Dang. That’s that’s a jerk move, brother. We appreciate you so much taking some time and hanging with us this morning. Congratulations on the success of this number one song. It’s been so much hard work and so much in the making. Man, we cannot wait to see you. Night two of Kicks99’s Guitar Pull coming up at the Bell Auditorium in a couple of months.
Drew Baldridge [00:06:04] Man. Well, can’t wait for you all. Thank you guys so much. And, thanks for playing my music.
