Last month, tragedy struck the Thousand Oaks community after a shooting broke out inside the Borderline Bar & Grill.

As you know, Sheriff's Sgt. Ron Helus died as a result of being shot six times.

Additionally, 11 people lost their lives on November 7, at the hands of Ian David Long.

Now, an investigation into Officer Helus's death shines new light on how he died.

Ian David Long shot Helus five times, however, the officer was reportedly shot six times.

The sixth shot that struck Helus came from a rifle that was fired by an officer with the California Highway Patrol.

The officer accidentally shot Helus while exchanging gunfire with Long.

Sadly, the shot fired from the rifle struck a vital organ in Helus's body, causing his fatality.

During a recent press conference, Ventura County Sheriff Bill Ayub said while it was friendly fire that ultimately killed Helus, his death along with the 11 other deaths were ultimately caused by Long.

The officer who accidentally shot Helus has opted to take personal leave.
