Luke Bryan paid tribute to his friend and American Idol co-star Lionel Richie as Richie was given the Gershwin Prize by singing Lionel's "Lady," a song Lionel wrote for Kenny Rogers in the late 1970s.

Before his performance, Luke said, "To be here for nights like this means the world to me; I wouldn't miss it for the world." He then turned to the audience and said, "This guy is everything you believe him to be. I promise you."

Bryan posted some images and a short video clip of the event on his Instagram. He wrote, "I've got nothing but love for you @lionelrichie! It was an incredible experience getting to honor you at the #GershwinPrize concert. Y'all tune in tonight at 9/8c on @pbs to see the full concert."

Richie responded to the post, "Love you, man!!

Other artists paying tribute to Richie included Garth Brooks, Gloria Estefan, Andra Day, and Chris Stapleton. You can watch the entire program HERE.
