Cody Johnson: What He Does It All For
Cody Johnson recently released the Deluxe edition of his Leather album with 13 new songs, including his duet with Carrie Underwood, “I’m Gonna Love You,” which is already climbing the charts.
Cody understands how important music is to him and releasing an album full of new songs is something he’s quite proud of.
He recently told us, “I’ll try not to get emotional, but like it means the world to me because at the end of the day, you know, we’re all human, and we all have our struggles, and I do too…a lot, you know, as a person, as a dad, as a husband, as a CEO, but getting to bring music to people is what I do it all for.”
Johnson takes creating, recording, and playing music for fans very seriously. He compares it to an addiction.
He says, “I’m not addicted to any drug in the world except that, and I’m very, very addicted to that. I cannot imagine my life without being able to create music and put it out to people to go play it live. It just does something for me, it’s like the only time when I’m in the studio, and I’m creating like, the whole world’s perfect. There are no problems. I sleep so good, like I just sleep so good after the day in the studio.”

The singer continued, “Then, I wake up the next morning bright and early, I can’t wait to get back to the studio to go create more. It starts from picking the songs or writing the songs all the way to the studio, and then from that point, it transitions to the stage to where, yes, I love being at home, and man, I hate leaving, but Friday, when you get on that plane, it’s like dude, I can’t wait to get to the stage tonight. I just can’t wait to get there and play these songs. And as soon as you get off stage, it’s like this (groan) can’t wait till tomorrow night. OK, wait to play again tomorrow night. We’re going to do it again tomorrow night.”
Cody has five nominations at the upcoming 58th Annual CMA Awards. His nods include Male Vocalist of the Year, Album of the Year for Leather, Single of the Year for “Dirt Cheap,” and two nominations in Music Video of the Year for both “The Painter” and “Dirt Cheap.”
The CMA Awards will be broadcast live from Nashville’s Bridgestone Arena on Wednesday, November 20, on ABC and the next day on Hulu. Johnson is a two-time previous CMA Award winner.
