Creator Confirmed ‘Squid Game’ Season 3
Hwang Dong-Yuk confirmed he is finishing Seong Gi-Hun’s story next year during Squid Game Season 3, per Collider. Director Dong-Yuk said that Season 3 is already done as he wrote it at the same time as Season 2. “I wrote Seasons 2 and 3 at the same time… and along the storyline, there is a turning point that takes place, and that leads to a series of different events, and also leads to a significant change in the character. Relatively speaking, the ending for Season 2 came to me quite early on.”
He added, “However, the ending to Season 3, actually ended up [in] a different direction than what I had initially conceived of. While I was working on the story and working on the script, I saw this new path that I wanted to go down, and so the ending of Season 3 actually changed in the process of creating Season 2.”
A Recap of Squid Game Season 1
If you still haven’t seen Netflix’s most popular show, here’s a recap of Season 1.
Squid Game Season 1 follows financially desperate contestants invited to play a series of deadly games inspired by children’s games for a chance to win a massive cash prize. Seong Gi-Hun, played by the wonderful and one of the most successful Korean actors, Lee Jung-jae is the series’ protagonist.
Together with other contestants, he must successfully overcome increasingly dangerous games, testing their life-or-death resolves. The competition is controlled by an organization of mysterious elites who find delight in watching players turn violent because of their greed.
Throughout the first season, themes of survival, class inequality, and human morality are explored. Perhaps this is one of the reasons why the series is popular: it’s too close to the truth. The participants each have their backstory and desperate reasons for competing. The episodes’ shocking twists and tension perfectly set up Season 2.
Plot Synopsis for Squid Game Season 2
Squid Game Season 2 continues with Gi-Hun as he seeks to uncover the truth behind the deadly games and expose those responsible for orchestrating the brutal competition. New players join the games, all in desperate need of money for various reasons. A boyfriend and girlfriend who lost their money because of a crypto scam, a transgender who needed funds to complete their gender-affirming surgery, a father with a sick daughter, a gambler who wanted to turn his life around and pay all his debts and his mother who also joined the games without his knowledge.
