It’s crazy to think that these country songs are turning 20 this year. Yes, 2004 was twenty years ago! How did that happen? Who allowed that to happen?! It absolutely doesn’t feel like twenty years have passed since these songs came out. However, a cool thing is, that a lot of them are just as good today as they were back in 2004.

What Was I Up To In 2004?

This is the most insane thing to think about. I graduated high school 20 years ago! How is that possible?! It just doesn’t feel real. Anyways, in 2004, I was graduating high school. Also in 2004, I was starting my second year as an employee of Kicks99. So I was lucky enough to play all of these songs when they were brand new.

So what were a few other things that happened for Kicks99 in 2004? Well, we moved into our current building in 2004. I can remember the day they flipped the switch and we started broadcasting from 4051 Jimmie Dyess Parkway. Again, that doesn’t seem like it’s been 20 years ago.

Other Things That Happened In 2004

Facebook, originally called TheFacebook started in 2004. Google started Gmail in 2004. Motorola released the Razr phone, y’all remember those? Everybody wanted one and they originally cost $499 at the time, which was an insane amount of money in 2004. The iPod mini and the Nintendo DS came out in 2004. As you can see, 2004 was a pretty cool year.

In country music, Tim McGraw, Kenny Chesney, Toby Keith, Rascal Flatts, and Keith Urban were some of the biggest artists on the charts. They were all having songs that were staying at number one on the charts for multiple weeks. I apologize in advance if this list makes you feel old. If I’m being honest, I kinda feel old making it. But 2004 was a simpler time and its really fun to look back and reminisce.

Here are some of the country songs turning 20 this year.

  • "Live Like You Were Dying" by Tim McGraw

I remember when this song came out, and playing it on the radio when it was brand new. This was one of those “wow” songs. You just knew it was going to be a hit the first time you heard it, and it was!

  • "When The Sun Goes Down" by Kenny Chesney and Uncle Kracker

Kenny Chesney had a huge year in 2004. This was one of the biggest country party songs of the year, and it still holds up 20 years later. In fact Kenny is bringing Uncle Kracker on tour with him again this year.

  • "American Soldier" by Toby Keith

Toby Keith is another artist who had a big year in 2004, and this one was one of his biggest hits that year. I remember getting a ton of requests for this song when it first came out.

  • "Redneck Woman" by Gretchen Wilson

Gretchen Wilson burst on the scene in a big way back in 2004. This song was HUGE! You couldn’t go anywhere without hearing this one. The phones in the Kicks99 studio were on fire for this one.

  • "Days Go By" by Keith Urban

Keith Urban was another artist that was on fire in 2004. Every song he released that year was a hit. By the way if you ever get the chance to see Keith Urban live, do it! He puts on one of the best shows you’ve ever seen.

  • "Remember When" by Alan Jackson

Alan Jackson was still going strong and pumping out hits in 2004. My fondest memory of this song is playing it for my grandma on my Saturday night show. She loved this song, and I would try and play it as often as I could because I knew she was up listening.

  • "Suds In The Bucket" by Sara Evans

Sara Evans was having a string of hits back in the mid 2000s, and this was one of them. We still play this one to this day on Kicks, and it still sounds just as good as it did 20 years ago.

  • "Some Beach" by Blake Shelton

I miss Blake with the mullet, yeah I said it! Some of my favorite Blake Shelton songs were during his “mullet” era, including this one. This song was stuck in my head a lot back in 2004.
