FLASHBACK FRIDAY: My Favorite Moments With Jake Owen

I have really been enjoying our Superstar Mini Concert Series here on Kicks 99! There have been SO many great, intimate performances—Tim McGraw, Kane Brown, Lady Antebellum, and many more. (If you’ve missed any, or if there’s one you’d like to hear again, we have an on-deman rewind of each one here.)

Today’s (May 29), is the one I’ve been most looking forward to: Jake Owen! Jake is one of my top ten favorite country artists, and has been since day one (way before I worked in radio.)

Jake puts on an incredible live show, and I was SO bummed when his concert in March at the Miller Theater got cancelled because of the COVID-19 pandemic. It was going to be an acoustic show, and I’m really hoping it gets rescheduled, because Jake, in my opinion, is at his best when it’s just him and his guitar. He often posts acoustic videos on his Instagram, and this one was one of my favorites:

These mini concerts have been a cool way to connect with artists (and for them to connect with their fans) while everyone is at home and social distancing. Listening to each of these performances from home, it’s obvious that they can’t wait to be back on the road, performing live for their fans—and us fans can’t wait, either!

Jake is one of the nicest artists that I’ve gotten to meet, and here are some of my favorite memories with him…

  This was the first time I met Jake, in 2014 at the James Brown Arena during his Days of Gold Tour. I was so excited (not that you can tell by my face here.) I get starstruck a lot, and the excitement tends to make me lose my filter...so, when Jake said hi, I just blurted out, "YOU LOOK LIKE A HOT JESUS!" Face palm...luckily, Jake is one of the most down-to-earth people, and laughed his butt off! I asked him to autograph my concert ticket (which is usually a no-no in meet & greets, but I figured I'd come this far, so it didn't hurt to ask.) He obliged, and we chatted for awhile (honestly, I don't remember much about the conversation after that because I think I went into shock!)

  We're fortunate to often get to meet artists more than once, but I never assume that they'll remember me from year to year, because they meet SO many people, and honestly, radio DJs probably start to look the same after awhile. So, when Jake came back to Augusta for our Kicks 99 Guitar Pull in 2017, I was obviously stoked! I was broadcasting with my friend, Jeff Reynolds (our afternoon host at the time) backstage at the JBA, and artists will come in throughout the afternoon for interviews. Some are more talkative than others, but I knew Jake was going to be a fun one to chat with. What I WASN'T expecting was for him to walk in, say hi, and tell me, "Hot Jesus is back!" Face palm again...we all busted out laughing!

  Jake returned to the CSRA in 2018 for a concert at SRP Park, and you KNOW I was there with bells on! Again, Jake made a Hot Jesus joke when he saw me, so it's obviously not something I'm ever going to live down...and I'm ok with that!
