The Kicks Wake Up Krew

There are so many great shows… both past and present shows.  And most TV shows you watch feature some sort of family dynamic.  Even if she’s not a main character, chances are, there’s a mom that’s represented in the show.  There are so many family dynamics represented in shows. Maybe it’s a close bond between mother and child or the exact opposite where there’s some hostility.  So, I figured with Mother’s Day coming up this Sunday, I’d share my top 7 favorite TV moms with you.

If I’m being honest, it took me a while to think about my favorite TV moms.  I actually checked out a few lists online to refresh my memory, since many of the shows I’m currently watching aren’t focused on families. But there are definitely a few that weren’t hard to choose. Let’s take a look!

Cody’s Picks

  • Nora Walker - "Brothers And Sisters"

It’s been a while since I binge watched this show.  It came out in 2006 and ran for 5 seasons.  “Brothers and Sisters” was definitely a family-focused show.  The Walker family was at the center of it, and you have just about every family dynamic you can think of.

And at the center of it was the mom… Nora Walker.  She was played by Sally Field.  I love Sally Field as an actress, and really loved her character in this show. She was full of wisdom but also had a lot of heartache to deal with.

  • Kristina Braverman - Parenthood

Parenthood” is another series that is full of various family dynamics.  The series ran from 2010-2015 and had 6 seasons. It tackled so many different ups and downs that families go through. And while there are many moms in the series, the one that stands out is Kristina Braverman, played by actress Monica Potter.

Kristina is a mom who learns her son has autism and has to navigate that.  But then she also battles cancer later on in the series. There are so many relatable moments throughout the entire show.  It definitely has me thinking about going back and rewatching!

  • Jill Taylor - Home Improvement

A throwback here with “Home Improvement”! The series started in 1991, and ran for 8 seasons before it ended in 1999. The mom, Jill Taylor (played by Patricia Richardson), was definitely outnumbered in her household with her husband and the three boys. But she handled things pretty well… and had to put up with a lot of craziness being married to Tim “The Toolman” Taylor!

Patricia Richardson was apparently a bit reluctant at first to take on the role, and didn’t want to play the role of another “perfect” sitcom mom.  She said she wanted her character to be “imperfect” and to “make mistakes.”  And I think she was a good balance of funny and the voice of reason.

  • Claire Dunphy - Modern Family

The show “Modern Family” ran for 11 seasons, starting in 2009.  It’s a comedy that shows a wide range of issues within families.  One of the main moms in the show is Claire Dunphy, played by Julie Bowen. Claire is a bit of a perfectionist and take-charge kind of mom.  She can seem a little aloof at times, but handles her hectic household in a way that leaves the audience laughing.

  • Rebecca Pearson - This Is Us

The series “This Is Us” is full of highs and lows around the Pearson family.  And at the center of it is the mother, Rebecca Peason, played by Mandy Moore.

Rebecca struggles with so many things throughout the show.  From losing a baby, raising triplets, losing her husband, and managing the relationships around her.  While not perfect, she is a strong, loving, and wise woman.  She faces many struggles that moms can relate to.  The whole show is both heartwarming and heartbreaking as you watch the family go through their lives and has to have hard conversations.

  • Sophia Petrillo - Golden Girls

“The Golden Girls” was an iconic show with so many laughable moments.  And Sophia Petrillo, played by Estelle Getty, is a memorable mom!  Her straight-to-the-point remarks and actions make her hard not to love!

  • Reba!

I couldn’t leave one of my favorite TV moms out… REBA!  There’s so much to love about the show “Reba.” Watching Reba navigate life as a single mom and dealing with her ex-husband and his new wife is heartwarming and hilarious. You have to love all of Reba’s wisecracks and one-liners. Not only is she an excellent singer, but a great actress and mom!
