Breast Cancer Awareness Month

October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month.  Breast cancer has affected so many lives. And, it continues to be the most common cancer diagnosed among women, according to the American Cancer Society. It is the second leading cause of death from cancer among women, with lung cancer being the first.

Breast Cancer Awareness

Throughout the month, you’ll see the color pink, which represents breast cancer awareness.  Raising awareness for this disease is so important, as, with all cancers, early detection can save a life. Below, you’ll find facts and statistics on breast cancer, including the importance of self-exams and more.

Events Throughout The Month

There are various events and fundraisers as well throughout the month of October. Many organizations will host events to increase awareness, and also raise funds for research, prevention, diagnosis, treatment, and finding a cure. At Beasley Media, we are proud to support Piedmont Augusta Foundation’s Miracle Mile Walk, coming up on October 21st.

Make More Survivors

The hope is to one day find a cure for this terrible disease.  Until then, it’s important to know your risks and address any concerns with your doctor. There are so many valuable resources within the community.

Piedmont Augusta Breast Health Center

The Piedmont Augusta Breast Health Center provides patient education, genetic counseling, and testing, along with their mobile mammography unit.  This wonderful center provides life-saving screenings for women here in our community, regardless of their ability to pay.

  • Breast Cancer Facts

    The National Breast Cancer Foundation provides great information, facts, and support for those battling breast cancer.

  • How Many Women Are Affected?

    • According to the National Breast Cancer Foundation, one in eight women will develop breast cancer in their lifetime.
    • This year alone, an estimated 297,790 women and 2,800 men will be diagnosed with invasive breast cancer.
    • Around 30 percent of all new cancer diagnoses in women will be breast cancer.
    • On average, a woman is diagnosed with breast cancer every 2 minutes in the United States.

     

  • Survival Rate

    • The National Breast Cancer Foundation shows 65% of breast cancer cases are diagnosed at the localized stage (meaning no sign of the cancer outside of the breast tissue).  This has a 5-year relative survival rate of 99%.
    • There are over 3.8 million breast cancer survivors in the United States.

  • Preventative Care

    • 47% of women have put off or postponed preventative care due to costs.
    • Poverty, less education, and lack of health insurance are associated with lower breast cancer survival rates
    • 49% of uninsured women delayed or went without preventative care because of costs.

  • Risk Factors

    • Age – Breast cancer incidence increases with age until the 7th decade of life.  The median age of diagnosis was 62 between 2015-2019.  Two out of 3 women are diagnosed after age 55.
    • Family History– Breast cancer can be genetic.
    • Obesity
    • Lack of physical activity
    • Poor diet
    • Drinking alcohol
    • Radiation to the chest before the age of 30 can increase your risk.
    • Hormone Replacement Therapy

  • Men Get Breast Cancer Too

    While we mostly think of breast cancer as a women’s disease, there are some rare cases where men are diagnosed as well.  This year, an estimated 2,800 men will be diagnosed, and around 530 will die from breast cancer.

  • Breast Self-Exam

    Doing a self-exam can be important way to detect any changes in your breast tissue.  BreastCancer.org offers step-by-step instructions on how to properly do your self-exam.  As always, if you notice any changes or have concerns, don’t hesitate to contact your doctor.  Early detection is KEY.
