This weekend in the CSRA we are going to see some record-low temperatures and staying inside is going to be the best plan you can have.  Why not put something in the crock pot and play some of the top board games of all time.

I think you will find it nearly impossible to go to someone’s home and while you are there someone is gonna say let’s play a game.  On average each home in America owns between 1 and 25 board and card games.  According to Statista.com, The Board Games market is projected to reach 2.12 billion dollars by the end of 2024.  Now while board games are still on the rise, we are also seeing versions of board games showing up in the app stores.

Yahoo Finance recently created the top board games of all time.  It’s one of the hardest forms of entertainment to break into.  There are more than 5000 new board games to hit the market every year.  With a number like that, we know they can’t all be hits.  With 5000 being released a year, you’d have to play 14 games a day to just try the 5000 released.  So this again backs up why so few new board games are successful

The Classic Board Games

I grew up with the old-school games and the beginning of the digital game era.  Now with that said, when I say digital era, it was the electronic handheld football game with the red dashes representing the players.  Getting one of those back in the day was like getting a PS5 today.  These are fun classic games I grew up playing and remember so much family time with these games.

  • Sorry
  • Uno
  • Trouble
  • Connect 4- Was it a board game?
  • Twister
  • Checkers-Again, is Checkers a board game?

Now in the late ’70s and early ’80s when video games started becoming a thing, I like a lot of you started dropping quarters into video games at the skating rink like Frogger, Space Invaders, Donkey Kong, and Pac-man. Most of the games are available to play on almost all video consoles today.

Now if you still enjoy going into a place like we did in the 80’s and playing video games and pinball, you may wanna check out Retro City Arcade in Evans.  They have classic video games, like Donkey Kong, Pac-Man, and Frogger the classic pinball games too.  So if you want a trip down memory lane like we did back in the day, Retro City Arcade, 4446 Washington Road, Suite 7 in Evans Across from Walmart is where you need to be

So what are the top 5 classic board games of all time?  Here we go, grab a game, build a fire, and make some family memories this weekend with these great board games.

  • #7-Operation

This was my all time favorite board game as a kid.  I can remember playing this game for hours at a time or until the batteries died.  Then fuss because we did have and “C” batteries in the house.  Why batteries, we these games did have a power cord!

Here is a picture of me at Christmas around 7 or 8 years of age proudly displaying my operation.

  • #6-Rummikub

I will admit that I’ve never heard of this game until this list.  I don’t think it’s one for me but there’s a reason this game has been since the 1950’s and has sold over 50 million units.  Maybe its one I should sit down and learn more about and give it a try.

  • #5-Candy Land

Spent hours playing this as an adult with the ton of nephews and nieces that I have.  As a kid can you see why Gumdrop Land, Nana’s Nuthouse, Lollipop Woods would just so much fun?  This one brings lots of memories back with my little ones

  • #4-Trival Pursuit

While this is one of the newest board games having been invented in 1981 it became a classic real fast.  This game doesn’t test your knowledge as much as it offers you an opportunity to show off your ability to recall obscure facts.  I’m ok with that, If I could just remember those facts!

  • #3-Clue

This is one that has been around since 1949 and has been rethemed hundreds of time.  It even inspired a movie.  I’ve never played this game, but having sold over a 150 million games, I’d say it’s pretty popular.

  • #2-Scrabble

This game is one that will test your friendships, your family loyalty all because you can’t remember how to spell a word or even know if its a real word.  You all know you’ve made up words and you’ve had people around you who wanted to question it but they didn’t know either.  This game is a fun game to kill hours upon hours at a time.

  • #1-Monopoly

This is the number one game for a reason.  To me, I just don’t get it.  Maybe because it feels like you start the game on Monday and it ends the next Monday.  I’ve never been able to finish a full game of Monopoly.  This game will test your patience.
