FLASHBACK FRIDAY: Jenny Sings The Perfect Song For Good Friday
Holidays–especially Easter–always make me homesick for my family, my hometown and especially the church that I grew up in. I spent many years in the alto section of First Baptist Church in Mooresville, North Carolina, and I always felt closest to God when I was making music with that choir.
Today is Good Friday, and I found this video from one of our Holy Week services in 2011. Each Holy Week, our choir would not only perform a cantata in celebration of Easter Sunday, but would also gather to sing in commemoration of Good Friday. We called this service “Songs At The Cross,” and it was a time of remembrance of Jesus’ death on the cross.
During the 2011 Songs At The Cross service, I was asked to sing a song called “Oh, My Jesus,” which was written by a dear friend of mine named Cotton Ketchie. Cotton had penned this beautiful poem in 1975, and in 1998, it was put to music by Tim Brown. Cotton gave me a demo recording of the song and I immediately fell in love with it. Accompanying me on piano is another dear friend of mine, the talented-beyond-belief Pam Hicks.
As much as I have always loved this song, it holds a heavier meaning to me today. I would give just about anything to rewind time and be back in my home church today, gathered with friends, worshipping with my choir, remembering Good Friday, without any concerns about coronavirus, quarantines or social distancing.
Thankfully, nothing–no virus, no pandemic, no shelter-in-place order–could keep Jesus in the grave. Resurrection Sunday is just around the corner, just as better & brighter days are ahead for all of us. I hope this song reminds you of the depth of Jesus’ love for you!
