WATCH: New ‘Fast 9’ Trailer Takes The Franchise To Outer Space
The trailer for F9, the ninth chapter in the Fast & Furious saga, was posted today on their YouTube channel.
The story line for the upcoming movie is: Vin Dieselās Dom Toretto is leading a quiet life off the grid with Letty and his son, little Brian, but Dom is forced to confront his long-lost younger brother, played by John Cena, in order to save his loved ones. His crew joins together to stop Domās forsaken brother, Jakob.
The film stars returning cast members Michelle Rodriguez, Tyrese Gibson, Chris āLudacrisā Bridges, Jordana Brewster, Nathalie Emmanuel, Sung Kang, Helen Mirren, Charlize Theron. Cardi B is a new character Leysa, a woman with a connection to Domās past, and singer Ozuna makes a cameo.
It’s notable that F9 is opening in movie theaters nearly 20 years to the day after the original Fast and the Furious movie debuted into theaters back in the summer of 2001, Ā asĀ Yahoo! Entertainment points out.
Tyrese Gibson’s Roman said in the new trailer, “Y’all ever thought about the wild missions we’ve been on? We’ve taken out planes, trains, tanks. I’m not even going to think about the submarine! And now we’ve got cars flying in the air.”
Roman and Tej Parker, played by Ludacris, are seen in the closing scene of the trailer in one of those aforementioned flying cars. Director Justin Lin teased that the duo may be breaking the final unexplored frontier: outer space. “I’m on the phone with scientists, learning about fuel and physics. It was great, having the scientists on the other line going, ‘Wait, what? What are you trying to do?’ I love it.” Lin also directed the third, fourth, fifth and sixth chapters of the series.
We see a glimpse of the late Paul Walker’s character Brian O’Conner, in the new trailer. Lin said, “It’s very impactful and it’s very important. I want to always be very respectful and how we present that. I think that [in] Nine, you will feel the presence of Brian, for sure.”
Despite Lin’s respectful attempts to keep Walker’s spirit alive, fans aren’t too happy that the movies continued after the actor’s real-life death in 2013. āFast 9 is really the beginning of the final chapter of the saga,” the director said, “so in doing that I think thereās a lot of room to really place our characters, and Brian obviously is a big part of the universe still.”
According to the outlet, that final chapter is going to play out over two more Fast and Furious installments, which will be shot back-to-back in the style of Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame. Lin said, “There’s moments where I remember hanging out with Vin and we’d just talk about, ‘Well, what would the last chapter be? Where is Dom going?’ And so it’s all starting to come together now. There’s a really different vibe on this one and it feels like we’ve all been on this journey and we’ve earned it. So I’m definitely in savor mode right now as we’re creating.”
