This Augusta Deli Started As A Grocery Store in 1879
Talk about your longevity! This Augusta Deli Started As A Grocery Store in 1879. Today, the Hildebrandt’s name is still on the sign, and they are still in business after all these years. Louis Hildebrandt is the one who started making the deli sandwiches, and you’ll see his name on a few of them at this Augusta historic deli. The German Louis, the Italian Louis, Sweet Heat Louis…you get the idea.
Hildebrandt’s
The sandwiches today are as good as they ever were. Piled high with fresh deli meats and cheeses on your choice of bread. This place is an Augusta treasure.
Think of an old hardware store with wooden floors that make that sound when you walk on them, you know, the creaking sound that is kinda soothing and takes you back to another time. This place is frozen in time. Just sitting in downtown Augusta to remind us what it used to be like.
During my recent visit, I had the Pastrami, Swiss with Sauerkraut and mustard on toasted rye bread. Delicious! Other sandwiches include The German Louis with Braunschweiger, Yachtwurst, Hard Salami, Zungenwurst, and Swiss with mayo and spicy mustard on Pumpernickel bread. Hungry yet?
If you want to add some South to your plate, they also have the old tried and true fried bologna sandwich. On white bread, of course, and mayonnaise….hopefully Duke’s.
The tea is in large jars, along with lemonade and water. The ice is in a small ice chest. Self-serve, of course.
Their website describes their store as A family-owned, German-inspired delicatessen with a heaping helping of Southern Hospitality.
Hildebrandt’s is open Monday through Saturday, 11 AM to 2:30 PM, and is located at 226 6th St, Augusta.
