The 5 Things Challenge – Tackling Clutter One Day At A Time
If I’m being honest, my home has way more stuff than I actually need in it. And I think that’s true for a lot of people. I’ve often wished I could live a miminalist lifestyle, but the thought of that is overwhelming. So, now I’ve decided to do a 5 things challenge between now and the end of the year.
What Sparked The Idea?
I was at home yesterday afternoon, and like I often do, I got overwhelmed with STUFF. It started while I was trying to clean off my kitchen counter. Just random stuff had collected there — receipts, water bottles, a birthday card, etc. And I just felt frustrated that I have so much stuff.
But, as someone with ADHD, trying to do TOO many things can lead to doing nothing at all. I have to find ways to make things easier. And I often have to break things down into smaller tasks or at least set myself up with some sort of reward for getting things done.
So, as I’m thinking about it, I had a thought. What if I just make it a point to get rid of or make a decision on at least 5 things a day from now until the end of the year. That’s where my 5 things challenge idea came from.
5 Things Challenge
There’s no science behind this at all. Five honestly just felt like an easy enough number. I’ve heard people talk about going to the gym and just deciding to workout for at least 10 minutes. If after those 10 minutes you really aren’t feeling it, then you can quit. The good news in that situation? Most of the time you start getting into it, and wind up working out longer.
My thoughts on 5 things is that maybe once I go through and select 5 things, maybe I’ll want to do more. But, even if I don’t at least I’ll have gotten rid of 5 items!
I think I’ll start in my closet. I can already think of a few items in there that I haven’t worn in forever that would make choosing 5 things pretty easy. And I plan to try to do this every day from now until the end of the year. I haven’t done the math, but that’s quite a few things to get rid of!
Expectation
I feel like I’ve read about similar challenges in the past. And I think starting out will be easy. It could honestly be as simple as going through my mail basket and getting rid of 5 pieces of mail. But, as the days progress, finding those 5 things might be a little harder.
I’ve just read so many things online about how clutter can make us feel. And so many people say it’s a relief when things are decluttered. I know when my house is clean and in order, I feel better. But again, trying to do it all in one day is just too much for my brain to handle.
I’m hoping by the end of the year I’ve gotten rid of, or donated, a good bit of stuff. And hopefully, not bringing in a lot of new stuff either. This is a challenge that I feel will have me heading into the new year a little lighter!
