Summer Reading Statistics
Summer learning loss, also known as the summer slide, is a real issue. Often, teachers spend the first few weeks back in the classroom reviewing and catching kids up on things they should already know. It’s the idea of, if you don’t use it, you lose it. If you are utilizing and practicing skills regularly, proficiency can drop. Here are a few statistics related to summer reading:
- According to Scholastic, kids in 3rd through 5th grade lose around 20% of their school year gains in reading. And they also lose around 27% of their gains in math.
- 87% of students in 3rd grade who received summer books agreed they were better readers in the fall.
- 76% of teachers say it’s “extremely important” to practice skills over the summer, according to We Are Teachers.
- 90% of teachers believe kids will be more successful long-term if they keep learning throughout the summer.
