Before Social Media. What did humans do?
Before social media. What did humans do? Well, we were bored.
How We Connected
Ha! Seriously, for one thing, if we wanted to keep up with our friends, you called them on a phone connected to a wall in the kitchen. You could move only about a foot away from the phone because of the line attached to the receiver.
Before Social Media. What did humans do? We would read, play in the yard, ride bikes, talk to our dad and mom and brothers and sisters. At breakfast, eating cereal, you would read the back of the cereal box for entertainment. Also, you didn’t know as much about your friends, because you didn’t see posts every day about what they were doing, who they broke up with, a picture of their food, their political preferences, etc.
Disconnecting
Before social media, we disconnected and didn’t even know it at the time. We enjoyed the simple things, like sitting on the back porch, fishing with dad, playing with friends, taking a walk, playing with your dog and simply relaxing the brain for a few minutes.
No worrying about someone doing cool things that you don’t do, or getting jealous of a friend who posted pictures of his expensive new car he bought, or that new grill Bill bought, you know Bill. Well actually you don’t. He just requested you and you accepted and now here he is….stalking you and commenting on your posts from Wisconsin. Yep, Bill from Wisconsin.
If we didn’t catch up with someone on the phone, we didn’t know what they were doing. If they lived out of town, there’s that whole long-distance thing. Can’t afford that!
So here we are connected to everyone we know and many more we don’t know as we stare into our phone while out with family and friends, in meetings, and at bars. We just stare into our phones.
But we are connected. Maybe too much.
Maybe it’s time we disconnected for a day or so and enjoy the life we used to have. I’m gonna try it!
