‘Yellowstone’s’ Luke Grimes Will Perform New Song at CMA Fest
Luke Grimes released a new song today, “Playin’ On The Tracks.” Written by Brent Cobb and Luke Grimes, the song is produced by Dave Cobb. He will sing the new tune during performances at next week’s CMA Fest.
Luke said of the new song, “This song was my first co-write with the very talented Bent Cobb, and I realized pretty quickly that he was going to be a big part of my musical journey.” He added, “With ‘Playin’ On The Tracks,’ it started with a mood. We were trying to capture the outlaw spirit of a sort of rambler. Once we got going, it sort of fell out. I love the shoot-from-the-hip attitude of this song.”
The lyrics include, “No I’ll never grow up / I’l never slow down / If you can’t hear the train whistle listen up cause it’s leaving town.”

Grimes, who plays Kayce Dutton on Yellowstone, signed a recording contract with Nashville’s Universal Music Group. He has made no secret of his love of music, speaking of it often in interviews over the years. The Ohio native is the son of a Pentecostal pastor. He played music in church, learned drums at church camp, and picked up guitar and piano. He later became a drummer and songwriter for a country band based in Los Angeles; however, acting pushed its way to the forefront of his career. While finding success as an actor in films including The Magnificent Seven and American Sniper, he always held onto his passion for creating music.
Fresh off his major festival debut at Stagecoach, Grimes will perform in Nashville for the first time at Ole Red at this year’s CMA Fest on Saturday, June 10. Later that night, he will headline the evening at “Music is Universal 2023,” presented by Universal Music Group Nashville. This event is free to the public at the Skydeck at Fifth + Broadway.
He will also be playing several country festivals around the country throughout the summer, including Under The Big Sky, Fairwell Festival, and Pilgrimage Festival.
