The Last True Coastal Village Of The South
We’ve all passed it on our way to the hugely popular Hilton Head Island in South Carolina. Usually, we pass through in a hurry to get to our weeklong stay at the beach. But this time, I stopped and checked out Bluffton, South Carolina, which has the title of one of The Last True Coastal Village Of The South.
First, Coffee!
First of all, this small town/village is absolutely beautiful. I parked my truck and started walking. The first stop would be a coffee shop! The Corner Perk was a great place to sit at a table on the sidewalk and people-watch. The coffee is excellent, too.
Church of the Cross
Bluffton is in Beaufort County and is also known as the “Heart of the Lowcountry.” This small town got its name because of its original one-square-mile location on a bluff on May River. The May River. The church in the pictures below is The Church of the Cross, and it’s on the river and has been a part of the landscape of Bluffton since 1857.
Farmer’s Market
Bluffton also has a farmer’s market; who doesn’t love a good farmer’s market? The market is on Thursdays from June through August, from 10 AM to 2 PM, and from September through May, from noon to 5 PM. The market is located on Boundary Street at Martin Family Park.
Let’s Go Fishing
Did I mention parks? There are about ten parks in the area; also, if you want to try your luck fishing in the May River, you can do that, too. Just head to the Calhoun Street Dock located at the end of Calhoun Street. The scenery is nice, even if you don’t catch anything!
If You Go
Bluffton is located on US Route 278 between Hilton Head Island and I-95. From Augusta, it’s 2hr 30m. Enjoy your time in Bluffton, and remember, Hilton Head Island is a short 15-minute drive from Bluffton.
Happy Travels!
